1001 ways to find employment

It is a tough year for many people in the job market. Generally, from my experience, the first few months of a year have many challenges in hiring, and that is sometimes from an organization hiring or by those who I have spoken with looking for work. This year, as I am looking into opportunities and growth along with many others, I have seen many challenges.

We have seen many in cuts throughout the country in employment within the private sector and with the public sector with the current administration’s plans. Many of the cuts in jobs have been speculated to be in preparation for the loses with tariffs to be announced in April 2025. The new job numbers shows a skewed and questionable first quarter for jobs with 228,000 new jobs added, but that number also comes with an increase in unemployment to 4.2% (https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2025/04/04/jobs-report-march-data/82815452007) Unemployment of those in the coming expected layoffs and those effected by government layoffs may not be considered with this news report of March numbers.

That being said, it is no time to give up or allow for any negativity. Jobs are still being posted and obviously with those numbers from March people are still being hired! As I have applied to over 1000 jobs in the last few months with few responses. It is a numbers game, right?

Change it up! I look to opportunities in ways to make changes that could best connect my experiences to the roles being posted. As I have advised before, simplicity in resume and making sure it meets standards with ATS is key. I have made those changes to my resume as you should, too. A clear and easy to read resume is important. Other areas I am addressing is my networking. After applying, connect with someone on Linkedin with the organization if possible or at least connect or follow the company.

The next big change is where to apply. My primary source prior to 2024 was Linkedin, Indeed, Glassdoor, and Careerbuilder, but today those are not the way to find employment. I have found some luck on the many other career websites. While many recruiters and influencers have their opinions, here are some of my common sites to start with:

Welcome to the Jungle (http://www.welcometothejungle.com)

Handshake (http://joinhandshake.com)

Glassdoor (http://www.glassdoor.com) – Still a good place to start!

USAJOBS.gov (http://www.USAJOBS.gov) – if you are still interested in government jobs maybe

GetWork (http://www.getwork.com)

WellFound (https://wellfound.com/jobs)

At the end of the day, finding a career by researching a company and applying directly on the website is best. I have connected with several people this way which have lead me to better understand the company and position. Check your local chamber of commerce and other internet sources to find companies you have an interest in working with, and do your research. There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Keep up the good fight. If they don’t find you a match now, maybe you can at least catch an eye or two and raise a brow. Keep it up.
